ANNUAL BUTTER TART TASTE-OFF GETS EVEN MORE CANADIAN

MORROW BUILDING, PETERBOROUGH FARMERS’ MARKET – From 9am to 1pm on Saturday, September 23, the 5th annual Butter Tart Tour Taste-Off will decide the best butter tarts from across Kawarthas Northumberland. This year the event features a special category of flavours that local bakers have created in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

The new “Canadiana Collection” includes tarts like the Nanaimo Bar Butter Tart, The Stompin’ Tom, the Marie Dressler, the Cavan Blazer, Maple Ice Wine, Coffee Crisp, Beaver Dam, the Goose and the Sugar Shack Maple (which are both gluten free), the Lumberjack and the Rick Mercer. This speciality collection also includes The Trudeau Butter Tart, which is named after The Right Honourable Justin Trudeau and features a healthy splash of morning glory muffin in the form of a butter tart.

“What a treat it is to be a judge of the Canadiana Collection at the Butter Tart Taste-Off this year. It’s a delicious reminder of how sweet it is to be home. We have so much to offer here in Peterborough—Kawartha and this array of award-winning butter tarts is just one more delectable thing that puts our beautiful region on the map,” said Maryam Monsef Member of Parliament for Peterborough—Kawartha.

At the annual Taste-Off, bakers will compete for butter tart bragging rights in five categories.

Taste-off Times – September 23, 2017

  • 9:00 AM – Best Plain Butter Tart
  • 9:45 AM – Best “Canadiana” Butter Tart
  • 10:30 AM – Best Gluten-Free Butter Tart
  • 11:15 AM – Best Emerging Baker (for new bakers on the tour)
  • 12:00 PM – Best of the Best (past winners compete in this category)

Butter tarts and other locally-made treats and fresh produce will be available for purchase at the event. The Taste-off will have more tarts than ever before, including coffee stations, seating areas, and a Kids Zone. Additional parking and a shuttle service are available at the Canadian Canoe Museum.
