Helping Grow Tourism for Kawarthas Northumberland
Sustainability
What Is Sustainable Tourism?
Sustainable tourism is defined by the UN Environment Program and UN World Tourism Organization as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.”
Additionally, they say that sustainable tourism “refers to the environmental, economic, and socio-cultural aspects of tourism development, and a suitable balance must be established between these three dimensions to guarantee its long-term sustainability” (UNEP & UNWTO, 2005: 11-12. Making Tourism More Sustainable – A Guide for Policy Makers).
RTO8’s Commitment to Sustainable Tourism
We believe tourism should enrich the people who live and work here, protect the landscapes that define our region, and create meaningful connections for visitors.
RTO8 proudly affirms its commitment to advancing the long-term economic, social, cultural, and environmental health of tourism across Kawarthas Northumberland by signing the Sustainable Tourism 2030 Pledge.
Our roadmap towards a more sustainable future is focused on strengthening RTO8’s internal policy, embedding sustainability into our strategic planning, supporting the industry adoption of sustainable tourism best practices, and collaborating with communities to advance positive social, cultural, environmental, and economic outcomes within the visitor economy.
Silver Rated Sustainable Tourism Destination Certification — 2026 Milestone
We are pleased to announce a significant achievement on our sustainability journey. Kawarthas Northumberland has been officially recognized as a Silver Rated Sustainable Tourism Destination.
RTO8 earned this prestigious certification through a rigorous, internationally recognized GreenStep assessment, on behalf of the region. Achieving Silver status was made possible in part by the strong climate and sustainability actions already underway, across Kawarthas Northumberland’s local governments, nonprofits, tourism operators and community.
Silver Certification is just one step in our broader sustainability journey. Building on this milestone, RTO8 has also developed a three-year Sustainability Action Plan to measure, monitor, and strengthen our own sustainability performance.
Defining Sustainability in our Region
Sustainable tourism is a holistic approach to travel that minimizes negative impacts and maximizes positive ones on the environment, economy, society and culture of a destination. These four pillars serve as our compass, guiding us toward a future where responsible tourism creates shared prosperity for our residents, local businesses, and visitors alike.
Environmental Sustainability
Protecting the iconic landscapes, waterways, and ecosystems of Kawarthas Northumberland by empowering our municipalities and tourism operators to take meaningful environmental action.
Economic Sustainability
Building a resilient year-round tourism economy that supports local businesses, to create meaningful employment, and drive long-term regional prosperity without compromising future needs.
Social Sustainability
Ensuring tourism contributes to the quality of life of residents by supporting community well-being, equitable opportunities, safe and welcoming experiences, and a strong regional workforce.
Cultural Sustainability
Celebrating and protecting the region’s unique heritage, stories, and identities. This includes honouring Indigenous cultures, local traditions, and ensuring tourism enhances rather than erodes the character of our communities.
Why Is Sustainable Tourism Important?
Sustainable tourism is central to RTO8’s mission, enabling the organization to promote tourism that benefits people, protects places, and preserves the region’s natural and cultural heritage for future generations.
