Helping Grow Tourism for Kawarthas Northumberland

Sustainability

What Is Sustainable Tourism?

Sustainable tourism is defined by the UN Environment Program and UN World Tourism Organization as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.”

Additionally, they say that sustainable tourism “refers to the environmental, economic, and socio-cultural aspects of tourism development, and a suitable balance must be established between these three dimensions to guarantee its long-term sustainability” (UNEP & UNWTO, 2005: 11-12. Making Tourism More Sustainable – A Guide for Policy Makers).

RTO8’s Commitment to Sustainable Tourism

Regional Tourism Organization 8 is dedicated to promoting and facilitating sustainable tourism practices that prioritize environmental conservation, community well-being, and cultural respect throughout the Kawarthas Northumberland Region.

Our sustainability policy underscores our commitment to creating positive and enduring impacts through sustainable tourism practices. We will strive to continually improve our performance and encourage our stakeholders to join us in this journey toward a more sustainable future.

Why is Sustainable Tourism Important
