RTO8 Programs
Trent-Severn Trail Towns
The Trent-Severn Trail Town program is a multi-community initiative designed to engage communities along the Trent-Severn Waterway, helping them enhance their ability to welcome visitors and better tap into the trail’s economic potential.
In Kawarthas Northumberland, our “trail” refers to the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site of Canada. With the support of Parks Canada, the Trent-Severn Trail Towns program is Canada’s first waterway trail town initiative. Trail Town Friendly businesses play a key role. They provide amenities, serve as ambassadors, and create a warm and welcoming environment for visitors.

Taste of The Trent-Severn Waterway
The Taste of the Trent-Severn Waterway Program is a way to connect communities to the trail (Trent-Severn Waterway) and cultivate trail culture.
Food and beverage providers across the region are encouraged to rename or create culinary items inspired by the Trent-Severn Waterway. Visitors can explore the waterway and enjoy themed menu items that connect them to their journey.
The program is free for food and beverage providers to participate in. They can be located anywhere in Kawartha Northumberland, as long as they name the menu item after the Trent-Severn Waterway.

Butter tart providers receive free promotion through social media, our website, and various ad campaigns and partners, including the Culinary Tourism Alliance, Destination Ontario, and the Globe and Mail.

Partnership Funding Program
RTO8’s focus is to help businesses and communities thrive by growing the visitor economy in ways that make our region stronger and more vibrant.
One way we do that is through the Partnership Fund initiative, a program designed to collaborate with the region’s tourism businesses to grow tourism within the Kawarthas Northumberland region. It’s a fund-matching program that’s mutually beneficial and guided by the Ministry’s objectives.

DMOs
Do you know who your Destination Marketing Organization is? We have four in our region: Northumberland County, The City of Peterborough, Peterborough County and Kawartha Lakes.
Destination marketing organizations are not-for-profit organizations that focus on developing tourism at a sub-regional level. Each DMO is set up differently but the main aim is to promote a location as a tourist destination through strategic branding and marketing. They also have other responsibilities which can include creating and executing marketing campaigns, hosting events for businesses, assisting with business development, supporting events, conducting market research, and acting as a liaison between the tourism industry, visitors, and the local community. If you’re a tourism business, your Destination Marketing Organization can help you promote your business to a wider audience. We encourage you to connect with and be familiar with your DMO.
Tourism Partners and Resources
When we talk about the tourism industry, we often refer to the Tourism Ladder, which illustrates the relationship between the different levels of the industry and how they connect.
There are also several organizations that play a vital role in supporting the tourism industry, such as the Culinary Tourism Alliance, the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario, Tourism HR Canada, Agritourism Ontario, and Indigenous Tourism Ontario.
You can learn more about each of these partner organizations by following this link: https://rto8.com/resources/external-resources/
Certifications
Industry-specific certifications can help you distinguish yourself from competitors, build consumer confidence, and help spread the word about your business. You can get certified as a bike-friendly business to attract cyclists, a Trail Town Friendly business to attract boaters and visitors exploring the Trent-Severn Waterway, and you can show your support for the 2SLGBTQI+ community by applying to be Rainbow registered.
